This girl reminds me of Paris, and not just because she has a giant Eiffel Tower on her shirt :) She's just...I don't know, kind of chic and interesting. Sexy in a confident, unselfconscious, natural kind of way. Plus, I like how stylish she looks in those harry potter glasses :p

the architect's brother

When I look at these, I have an overwhelming feeling of looking into the Industrial Age around the late 1850s... they're like perfect, eerie dreams.

cause of peace... that's like saying a hunk of butter

source: flickr
i like you all, very much. for the hitherto unexposed we have: bob marley, jack kerouac, devendra banhart, charlotte gainsbourg, & bob dylan. in large part, i see these people as examples of lives well-lived (even those still in progress). yes these are the heavy-weights (maybe minus charlotte g) & all the nooks and crannies of their circles and works are worth exploring.
Friday...I'm fatter than yesterday.
Jean Ackerman

This is a photo of Jean Ackerman - surprisingly hard to find any info on her at all, but I do know she was a hollywood actress in the 20s, and she used to be a Ziegfeld Girl. Very graceful and provocative, i like her.
Groggy.

Morning everybody. Welcome to Black Friday. She's a little treasure no? Reminds me of Alice in Wonderland...

Second "Anna-keep-out-of-the-kitchen-you're-knocking-stuff-over" Post
David Downton
There's a lull in the cooking frenzy... so I'm amusing myself. David Downton is awesome. He'll be talking at my school next semester, I'm exited :) I love the fluidity and the supreme confidence of his drawings - he knows exactly where he wants to put the one line that will pull all the rest of them together.

from the may 2007 issue of vogue: natalia vodianova channeling the unforgettable styles of legendary designer paul poiret. there's a fairly good article that accompanies this shoot, too. the french fashion designer poiret is considered one of the most influential designers ever to have lived. personally, i think the look of 1920s vamp is golden. the whole image screams of a wonderful assertiveness/self-awareness and the ability to boldly tout a provocative appearance without necessarily being a tramp.

The cool and the still cool but slightly disturbing...
Source: The Enchanted Doll
So I had a huge amount of Barbies when I was little, and I was never much into them. My mom pressed it but they really just weren't my thing...I couldn't see the point. Plus, they were all the same doll, with this awkward body and dorky smile... but when I was 13 my mom got herself the original 1950s Barbie doll to display in her office, and I adored it, I thought she looked great. These are some of the original styles.
Above that, is Batgirl. Batgirl's just cool. I think they did the doll well. 'Nuf said.
Ok, the top doll requires a little more explanation. The woman who makes these dolls is Marina Bychkova, and they are handmade porcelain dolls with handmade clothes and accessories. See the beading on that dress? The painted silk on the underskirt? Yeah, she did all that by hand. This particular doll is meant to be Alice in Wonderland (one of my favorite characters of all time) and she "got bored" of the traditional and cliched versions of her so she made up her own personal version, which is stunning. The woman is not just a doll-maker, she is an artist, a master of her craft, and I'm enchanted by her girls, I think they're just beautiful, so delicate and detailed and exquisite.
But they also disturb me on some level, there's just something about them that creeps me out a little. Maybe its the blatant sexuality of the dolls, or the materials she uses... they remind me of old fashioned porcelain dolls, which in turn remind me of Victorian macabre story... either way, I heard about these dolls a couple of years ago in an issue of Craft Magazine (love) and I never forgot them... or my fascination with this woman's skills.

My own ballet contribution
Source: The Ballerina Gallery
Yasi's post about the ballerina was really cool, so I went hunting and found this picture of American ballerina Maria Tallchief. She was a dancer in the 40s well into the 60s. I loved this picture, just the grace of it but also the lighting! Oh...just look at it. So beautiful and a little spooky too.

the prophet

aside from his famous writings, lebanese author khalil gibran has an impressive repertoire of beautiful drawings. i really really love the sense of grace, vulnerability and delicacy and how the body language portrays such subtle emotion. these are all images from his book "the prophet" which i highly recommend.
