Flying

I'm back in San Francisco, and school starts tomorrow. I was starting to get antsy on the flight over, and then I looked out the window and was totally transfixed by the beautiful cloud formations outside that were leaving shadows on the water below me. 

So I took about a bajillion pictures. Literally. And I was totally psyched about these fifties sunglasses I found at Nicole's, so I took some pictures of myself too.

But seriously, don't clouds just make you feel peaceful? 

The Sartorialist Strikes again

I love this guy. I really do. What I see every day, he captures. Its great. My favorite of these is the red head; she's just beautiful, so sharp too. Elegant and daring at the same time. I also really like the beardy guy, I just love his face. It reminds me of a noble in Tsarist Russia or something...Count Vladonovich or something. 

I'm heading back to San Francisco today after my month long Newport Beach hiatus. Wish me luck.

New Yoik

Pretty soon I'll be moving here. Hopefully. But what then? God, its scary. This whole growing up thing. 

Liv Tyler

I love this picture of Liv Tyler, its so fresh and natural, and also almost...luminescent. She's a beautiful woman. I love the shapes her hair makes in the photo!

Stationery

I've always loved paper. Different patterns of paper, letterpress, lithograph, Gocco print...stationery makes me happy. 

I just bought a bunch of "correspondence cards" - apparently all the rage right now, they're like postcard sized letters. And I saw this woman's business cards and I loved it; they're like old fashioned labels in the New York Public Library. 

My favorite touches are the letter-pressing of her information and that each card has a catalog number printed at the bottom. 

Her photographs ain't bad either ;) 

Baldovino Barani

I realize I've been quite lax about posting lately...I just have less of a connection to this blog now that I'm not sharing it with Yasi. I posted because I wanted her to see and now she's not here. 

Anyway, for the few who do read this thing, I'll try harder, which brings us to today's post about Baldovino Barani. He's a fashion photographer who incorporates alot of movement into his pieces, I love the use of the fabrics and the colours.

vanity fair portraits at lacma

the los angeles county museum of art (lacma) has what looks to be a very great exhibit right now featuring 150 portraits from the archives of vanity fair magazine. the show includes photos from magazine's first period (1913 - 1936) and second (1983 - present) & is the first comprehensive showing of their greatest portraits from both past and present archives. featured photographers include: cecil beaton, harry benson, julian broad, imogen cunningham, man ray, marry ellen mark, mario testino, steven meisel, herb ritts, bruce weber, annie leibovitz, edward steichen, & helmut newton. it runs until march 1, 2009 and as soon as i get back to los angeles i am going. 

the architect's brother

anna's bird-man picture post was too cool to be left in ambiguity. by chance, i stumbled across the image and a site of the full exhibit it belongs to! the show is called "the architect's brother" and is a collection of works by Robert & Shana ParkeHarrison. the ParkeHarrisons, despite the misleading appearance of their photographs, are contemporary american photographers who have been exhibiting their work since the mid-1990s. they are internationally renowned for their unique artistic approach to photography and the extreme production effort put into making each piece. the pair draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, including silent films, dreams, inventors, theatre, cinema, & literature. and often presents the prevailing topic of a wounded earth attempting to heal itself through the vignette of a man in a black suit embroiled in some interaction with the landscape. "the architect's brother" is a traveling exhibit, though the ParkeHarrison's work can also be found in the notable collections of such museums as The Whitney Museum of American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, & The National Museum of American Art at the Smithsonian. 

When I look at these, I have an overwhelming feeling of looking into the Industrial Age around the late 1850s... they're like perfect, eerie dreams.

Romeo & Juliet

Couldn't tell you why, but these pictures make me think of Romeo & Juliet...very distinctly. Sad and strong.
